Alberta’s Highway 40

About Alberta’s Highway 40

Located in Western Alberta, Highway 40 runs south to north and is also called Bighorn Highway and Kananaskis Trail in Kananaskis Country. It’s segmented into four sections that extend from Coleman, in the Municipality of Crowsnest Pass, to the City of Grande Prairie in the north. We’re focused on the 190 km between Grande Cache and Grande Prairie, which saw 12 fatal collisions and 149 serious collisions between 2012 – 2016.

Hazards Along the Route

Many of Highway 40’s segments include a mix of paved and gravel sections. The second and third segments travel through the Canadian Rockies and, while the mountain views are spectacular, road closures can be frequent due to winter weather conditions. There’s also an abundance of wildlife including elk, bears, mountain goats and moose along the route.

Driver Safety

Preparing for the road conditions and practicing safe driving habits can eliminate much of the potential for collisions on Highway 40.
